Leeds GATE Statement on West Yorkshire Police

Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange condemn the recent incident involving West Yorkshire Police and use of force against a child on an encampment in West Yorkshire.

Violence against children is always wrong and there is never an excuse.

We are aware of a video that is circulating online of the incident. The video is very distressing and we would like to issue a content warning for the violence it shows.

This incident will have a wide impact and spark painful memories of current and past experiences with the police for Gypsy and Traveller communities.

Our staff team work very hard to support our children and young peoples’ health and wellbeing to build a better future. This incident demonstrates the lack of care, at an institutional level, for Gypsy and Traveller children.

We are working to try and seek justice and affect change. We cannot comment further on a developing situation. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by police violence.

If you are in West Yorkshire and are affected by this incident, or would like to report another incident with our support, you can contact us on 0113 240 2444 and ask for Tom.

Our thoughts are with the family affected and their children at this distressing time.
