Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month

Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month

Community, cultures and history are important always and throughout the year, but marking with a celebration month is a great way to get people involved and raise awareness with a great program of events.

Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month is all about all Gypsies and Travellers across West Yorkshire feeling heard and represented and that their culture and heritage is valued. Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller are often put together, but are three distinct ethnic groups with shared roots of being nomadic. Each have their own unique histories and modern day cultures.

Find out below how you can get involved this June.

Our resources

Our Education Pack brings together our own resources and knowledge, as well as many others from brilliant Gypsy and Traveller people and organisations. It’s an easy way to learn more about these communities and their culture and heritage.

Our Colouring Book was made by our Communications Assistant Lily and features lots of wonderful pages to colour and puzzles to do.

No Place to Call Home is a graphic novel and illustrated history of how Gypsies and Travellers have been treated by the government, police, local authorities and settled communities from the 1960s to the 1990s. Produced by Gerardo D’Ambrosio and Becky Taylor. It out of the three year research project, Realities Checked that Leeds GATE were part of. It provided the first systematic, historically grounded account of the crime and criminal justice experiences of Gypsies and Travellers in England since the 1960s.

You can also download a poster and graphic for sharing online or putting up wherever you can to share the message of hope, inclusion and pride.
