Leeds GATE statement on the passing of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill

Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange have worked for almost 20 years across West Yorkshire, improving the lives of Gypsy and Traveller communities that call the area their home as they pass through or more permanently.

The passing of the Police Bill into law won’t change this, but it will make our work significantly harder. From the very beginning our organisation was founded, led by and still belongs to Gypsies and Travellers. So with our staff team who are from these communities, and our members past and present, we stand in solidarity against this legislation.

We know this law will jeopardise Gypsy and Traveller people just trying to live their lives and protect their culture. Criminalising trespass on land, without providing the numbers of sites and safe stopping places people need, means people may have no choice but to break these new laws.

There is fear and worry amongst people right now, but there is also resilience and a determination to come together to help those that need it. We will share resources, knowledge and community strengths in the same spirit that people have come together in protest.

As the Bill becomes law we will continue to protect the right to live a nomadic life in every way that we can. Its erasure restricts freedom for all and a loss of dignity, respect and care we need in our communities. Leeds GATE belongs to Gypsies and Travellers and our history is one of coming together in partnership; join us in the fight back.
